Baharestan Square was famous for hosting the parliament (far side of the pricture), for historical events happening around it in the Constitution Revolution in 1900s), for its "Shah-Abad" avenue (the near side of the picture) hosting the bookstore market, for its wide mid-park that allowed fireworks and (military) music bands play in national holidays, and for the taste of its famous fresh "Pirashki" (pancake) stores.
Today: The parliament has moved to the former Senate building, the parliament library is still there. Tehran's mid-day traffic-restricted area starts here, hence the Square still enjoys some relief among the city's over-crowded cross sections. The bookstore business moved away gradually to the front of Tehran University, while some print shops still reside in the now "Republic" street. Some cafe's still offer "Pirashki"s but no means of comparison with the old times remains accessible. Even the "Pirashki" and fantasy bread business moved to the front of Tehran University! Who said "Elm" (science) and "Naan" (bread) are too-divided issues?!
